X11 Mac
- How I fixed it was opening up XQuartz and then opening up the 'Terminal' app from the 'Applications' menu. Then running the command export DISPLAY=192.168.1.X:0, then xhost +. It outputted something like this 'access control disabled, clients can connect from any host'.
- After going through this fix (the instructions are easy to follow), just make sure you have X11.app running on your mac. Then, from any remote OSX/unix/linux box, just type: ssh [email protected] and you will be able to run any X11 program remotely. As a side benefit, you can launch X11 apps from the OS X terminal.

I also think that this should indeed work. I only have Macs at my disposal, but I can hop around with SSH and still have my X11 connections forwarded correctly.
Can you use X11 apps that use GTK directly from the Mac? Can you use GTK apps on the REHL box when directly (not hopping) connecting from the Mac? Just to see if it is a forwarding problem or a GTK Problem.
Check your PATH so that the GTK libs can be found on the Mac.
Maybe test your X11 forwarding with -Y (trusted X11) instead of -X. You may also want to have a look at your /etc/sshd_config to allow X11 forwarding.
Weird idea: Create a tunnel from your client when connecting to the Mac server that will forward a port directly to the RHEL. Then directly connect from the Client to the RHEL using SSH through the tunnel.
